About
Baizhang Huaihai (720–814) was a Chinese Chan master who established the first independent Chan monastic code, separating Chan communities from the Indian Vinaya-based model. His famous rule 'A day without work is a day without eating' defined the Chan emphasis on manual labor as spiritual practice. A student of Mazu Daoyi, he taught Huangbo and Guishan, shaping two major Chan lineages.
