Bassui Tokushō (1327–1387) was a Japanese Rinzai Zen master known for his relentless inquiry into the nature of mind and his question 'Who is the master?' He lived as a hermit for much of his life before reluctantly accepting students. His dharma talks and letters, collected in 'Mud and Water,' convey an urgency and directness that continue to inspire Zen practitioners.
