The foundations of Vajrayana practice are laid out with eloquence and precision here by one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters of our age. The imperialist ambitions of China – which invaded Tibet in the late 1940s – have sparked the spectacular spread of Tibetan Buddhism worldwide, and especially in western countries. This work is a study on the malleability of a particular Buddhist tradition; on its adaptability in new contexts. The book analyses the nature of the Tibetan Buddhism in the Diaspora. It examines how the re-signification of Tibetan Buddhist practices and organizational structures in the present refers back to the dismantlement of the Tibetan state headed by the Dalai Lama and the fragmentation of Tibetan Buddhist religious organizations in general. It includes extensive multi-sited fieldwork conducted in the United States, Brazil, Europe, and Asia and a detailed analysis of contemporary documents relating to the global spread of Tibetan Buddhism. The author demonstrates that there is a "de-institutionalized" and "de-territorialized" project of political power and religious organization, which, among several other consequences, engenders the gradual "autonomization" of lamas and lineages inside the religious field of Tibetan Buddhism. Thus, a spectre of these previous institutions continues to exist outside their original contexts, and they are continually activated in ever-new settings. Using a combination of two different academic traditions – namely, the Brazilian anthropological tradition and the American Buddhist studies tradition – it investigates the "process of cultural re-signification" of Tibetan Buddhism in the context of its Diaspora. The text presented here in Tibetan with English translation is the Bountiful Cow of Accomplishments and provides directives for the two phases of the Khandro Thugthig. It covers the entirety of the Vajrayana path, from the generation phase, through the completion phase to the Great Completeness. The Khandro Thugthig is an important cycle of teachings and practices revealed by Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-1987) as a spiritual treasure. Among the three roots of tantric practice, it specially relates to the sky-farer. The directives translated here are most closely associated with Yeshe Tsogyal, the Tibetan princess who became the consort of the great master Padmasambhava and assisted him when in the eighth century he introduced tantric Buddhism to Tibet. But Yeshe Tsogyal is more than a historical figure, for she is a wisdom sky-farer who inspires yogins to realize the ultimate nature of mind. The instructions translated here are both rare and profound. Those sincerely interested in these teachings and who wish to put them into practice may rejoice that such profound keys have been made available to them. For those having a karmic connection with this tradition and this lineage, texts such as these can be a catalyst for spiritual liberation. Dudjom Rinpoche was one of the seminal figures in Tibetan Buddhism in the twentieth century, yet very few of his religious writings have been translated into English. This volume contains a generous selection of his inspiring teachings and writings, the core of which is a lengthy discussion of the entire path of Dzogchen, including key instructions on view, meditation, and conduct, along with direct advice on how to bring one's experiences onto the path.
