About

Ryōkan Taigu (1758–1831) was a Japanese Soto Zen monk and poet beloved for his simplicity, playfulness, and tender humanity. He lived as a hermit in a small hut on Mount Kugami, begging for food and playing with village children. His poetry in both Chinese and Japanese captures the beauty of an unadorned contemplative life in nature.
