Hakuun Yasutani Roshi (1885–1973) was a Japanese Zen master in the Soto and Rinzai traditions. He founded the Sanbo Kyodan school, which became a major vehicle for bringing Zen practice to Western practitioners. His American students included Philip Kapleau and Taizan Maezumi, whose lineages subsequently spread throughout North America and Europe.
